Dear CAMBA Community Members,

On January 27, 2016, President Trump signed an executive order halting the entry of refugees, and barring travel and immigration from seven Muslim-majority nations. The executive order is the latest step in a series of President Trump’s campaign proposals, including “a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States.” The order has alarmed many within, and beyond, the Muslim American community as contrary to core American principles, such as equality and diversity.

In response to the executive order, attorneys and legal professionals across the country, including CAMBA members, organized, filed legal challenges, represented detained persons, and volunteered at airports. We are proud of, and have deep respect and admiration for, all of their efforts. These efforts not only directly helped those affected by the executive order, but also helped shape the legal challenges being filed in the judicial system. For example, a nationwide temporary restraining order preventing the enforcement of the executive order is currently being considered by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Litigation on the merits of the challenge continues.

CAMBA’s mission is to foster a sense of fellowship amongst diverse Muslim legal professionals and establish an institutional presence within the Capital Area legal community. As part of this mission and in response to the executive order, CAMBA will provide education and training on legal issues that impact the Muslim and non-Muslim community at large. CAMBA will also serve as a resource by facilitating communications from legal organizations and professional associations to our members.

In an effort to share resources with the community, CAMBA has created a "Community Resources" section on our website. The section has two tabs, entitled "Executive Order" and “Guidance and Fact Sheets”, and provides resources related to the executive order. Over the last week, members of the CAMBA community posted resources related to the executive order through the CAMBA yahoo listserv. If you are not already subscribed to the CAMBA yahoo listserv, you may do so by sending a blank email to: You may also share resources directly with the board by sending an email to

We encourage you to reach out to us with any questions, concerns, or feedback you may have about how CAMBA can be a resource for you at this time.

Thank you,

CAMBA Board of Directors
